Caesar's Crown is a technically difficult pattern which is probably why I'm collecting antique versions rather than making one of my own. This is a signature quilt from 1851 from Berks/Montgomery Co, PA (near Philadelphia) from the Starley Antique Quilt Collection.
It was made for Elizabeth Bickel or Bechtel (seems to depend on the neighborhood and how English or German it was). The blocks were "signed" written by a paid professional scrivener or writer.
Such beautiful quilting expecially for a signature quilt which generally have very basic quilting as they are "all about the signatures/names".

Another beautiful quilt! I love the fabrics, and such gorgeous lettering! I'm always amazed how they were able to script so beautifully on fabric way back when. I'm lucky to get my name straight, and I'm using freezer paper with lines on it! :o)
ReplyDeleteI love the movement this quilt has, with those centers not being uniformly placed.
ReplyDeleteYou must own a mountain of red/green quilts with a little yellow/cheddar in the mix! : )
