Top Traditional Quilt Blog - Thank You

Honored to find I was just named one of the Top 15 Traditional Quilt Blogs (and the #2 spot to boot) by Feedspot, a Blog Feed service.

If you are just finding out about me, I am a nationally Certified Quilt Appraiser through AQS - one of less than a 100 in the US and Canada and the only one in Utah. I'm an avid antique quilt collector, researcher, and historian. I enjoy sharing my antique quilt collection via the blog, facebook, Instagram, etc. under Textile Time Travels. But I LOVE sharing my quilts in the cloth, in person with quilt guilds, shops, quilt retreats, etc I specialize in early quilts from the 1800s, both applique and signature quilts, as well as museum quality pieces.
HAVE QUILTS - WILL TRAVEL!!

See my pages - listed under the banner photo for more information on quilt appraisals, antique quilt classes, trunkshows, etc.
I also enjoy making traditional antique reproductions of quilts in my collection and  teach other to make them as well. I even sometimes make modern versions of my antiques. I also like to make other types of modern quilts.

More wonderful treasures from my quilt appraisal educational journeys. Revisiting the Millyard Museum Manchester New Hampshire.

There was a quilt exhibit and here are two more of the delightful quilts.  1st up is an unusual cigar band quilt from Massachusetts. Circa 1900

2nd is a striking red/white Drunkard's Path quilt that is also a signature quilt and from Manchester!

Hexie Fun Vintage Hexagon Quilt

Hexagon quilts have been around for a long time, since the 1700s in England. Yes, hexie madness is nothing new. I'm particularly fond of hexagons pieced in the medallion setting. Here's one from the 1950s, part of the Starley Quilt Collection.

If this came across my appraisal table I would note the strong visual, graphic appeal due to the careful color placement. Note that it starts out as a simple flower garden rosette and just keeps getting better and better.

Unusual Star Quilts -French Star Variation

I'm always on the search for unusual quilt patterns, the more unique and older, the better. And I really like the uncommon French Star pattern and variations. Here's one from my traveling antique collection, Antique Stars trunk show. Enjoy

Antique Quilt Treasures - Oxford Seminary Quilt - Chester County Historical Society

If you are ever near the Philadelphia area - make a beeline for the Chester County Historical Society!!
They have amazing antique treasures, particularly quilts. Last summer I was blessed to visit CCHS with my fellow certified quilt appraisers from PAAQT aka the Professional Association of Appraisers Quilted Textiles. We visited as part of our continuing education training.

Among the amazing quilts we saw at CCHS was the famed Oxford Seminary Quilt from the 1840s. Enjoy a few photos. Let me know if you'd like to see more of this one and some others?

Antique Cheddar Quilts or Its Better with Cheddar

Did I mention I LOVE antique cheddar quilts and remaking them as well? I DO! Thought I'd share a bit of my collection.

Antique Crib Quilt Burgoyne Surrounded - Double Sided Crib Quilt

A rather unique crib quilt featuring 4 Burgoyne Surrounded blocks circa 1860. Burgoyne Surrounded isn't a super common quilt pattern and is even less common as a crib quilt.  Starley Quilt Collection, part of my Sweet Little Things antique crib/doll quilts trunk show or antique quilt study class.

Such an unusual fabric choice for a two color quilt - so busy that the block design can hardly be deciphered close up and needs distance to be truly appreciate.

The pieced backing is a nice surprise. It is an earlier/older top that was likely recycled to create the quilt. Note the Baptist Fan/ Elbow quilting

Day 4 Trapunto Carpenter Star variation

.
Featured today is an early Carpenters Star variation with stunning trapunto or stuffed quilting, part of the Starley quilt collection. And available to come to a quilt guild near you. Purchased from Fourth Corner Molly of Washington State via ebay. c. 1840s

It has been interesting over these past 8 blog entries (4 days with 2 blogs) how freeing it has been to just post quickly and not obsess. A friend noted that she was blogging fast like a "slacker" and I disagreed because she was doing a post even if not a deep posting. And I just saw another blogger mention how easy it is to just share on facebook. So I'm trying to post more loosely here and make it as easy as facebook.
Most of these posts will be quite brief and short on information so if you have questions, please ask in the comments section.
In the full shot you can appreciate the dense figural quilting.

Absolutely adore the 5 pointed star with circular feather frame. And come in closer, closer, closer ... look at the intense background stippling. This maker LOVED to quilt.

And check out the pineapple and other wonderful quilting.

day 2 - Goose in the Pond

Day 2 of the daily blogathon - so far so good. Here's one of my first antique quilts and it is still one of my favorites. Goose in the Pond or Gentleman's Fancy. C. 1900 from Ohio. Note the triangle "coping strips" added to the block to make it fit with the rest of the blocks. So the maker experienced "technical difficulties" but SEWED ON!!!

The full quilt

and another close-up ... Contact me if you'd like to see any of my collection in the cloth. Have quilts, will travel!

Antique and Modern Quilt Adventures in Southern Utah

Feeling a bit (crazy)

Need a quilt fix, come on down and see us in St. George, Utah, January 6-10 at the 2nd annual
Quilt St. George retreat.

This is one of the classes I will be teaching.

I will also be doing 2 in-depth  half day antique quilt sessions.  Patterns Through Time and Sign of the Times.  Great opportunity to see lots of museum quality antique quilts, up close and really examine them.  What an amazing way to learn quilt history.

**I will also be doing appraisals**

And whether you already love applique or have never tried it, my Red Rock Mini Landscape is the perfect class for you.  You'll get to make an easy yet very impressive souvenir of your trip to Southern Utah.

And that is not all I'm doing in St. George, click on the link to see all my activities.

Utah Antique Quilt Study Appraisals

You'll find me in booth #512.
I will be doing appraisals on May  8, 9, and 10, 2014 at the Home Machine Quilting Show (HMQS) in Salt Lake City/Sandy, Utah. I am certified by American Quilters Society (AQS) to appraise all types of quilts-antique, vintage and newly made and traditional and art quilts. I will be in booth #512 so please stop by.  Appointments are still available, so please bring in your quilts.  And I can also appraise quilts that are hanging in the show or in special exhibits or booths.

I will be doing a 20 minute lecture/trunk show Thursday at 2:30 p.m. on Rising to the Challenge, Creating Award Winning Challenge Quilts.  And on Friday at 2:00 p.m. I'll be sharing antique quilt masterpieces in a 20 minute trunkshow.  This is an appetizer to my hour slot at 4:00 p.m. for my lecture/trunk show on "Patterns Through Time  -- Revolutionary Changes in American Quilts" showcasing about a dozen examples of how quilt patterns change over time (about 25 antique quilts).
And in my booth #512, I will have several wonderful antique quilts.
