Day 9 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Starley Quilt Collection

Hmmmmm, what treasure to share tonight?  One of my absolute favorites is this Rose of Sharon with fabulous applique birds, berries, and blooms. The star of my Birds and Blooms trunkshow.

Aren't these birds delightful!!! Every inch of this quilt is filled with love and JOY. Hence, the name, Quilted Joy.

It is a 9 block Rose of Sharon created by someone who loved hand applique and was pretty good at hand quilting too.

I loved this full sized quilt so much that I just had to reproduce it in 1/2 size - small scale. Pattern is available on my Etsy shop.

Day 29- Old and New Oak Leaf, Reel A Month of Antique Hand Quilting

Tonight's quilt is antique Oak Leaf (Reel) quilt with hand applique and lots of straight-line hand quilting. And the single block/quiltlet is my repro version made for a potholder project for Pam Weeks. Potholder quilts are constructed of blocks that are individually quilted and bound.

Here's a close-up of my little quilt. Click on photo to enlarge. Hand applique and hand quilted.

The Oak Leaf with more of its red and green friends ...

The full quilt. So effectively composed with the sashing and red cornerstones and the 5 strip borders.

Antique (Inspired) Hand Quilting Month - Cheddar Baskets Day 23

Here is my hand quilted miniature Cheddar Baskets quilt made for the American Quilt Study Group 2016 Quilt Study of Basket Quilts. It is currently traveling with the Baskets exhibits. Don't forget to click on the photos to enlarge and see details!

Here's my top (left) with the antique on the right. The original had only 3 fabrics, cheddar, blue, and pink. I kept that color scheme but used 13 different pinks and 13 different blues for a scrappier look. I use foundation paper piecing for the baskets and the sawtooth border. I hand quilted using the same patterns as used on the original.

Month of Hand Quilting - Antique Inspired Quilted Joy Day 21

Here is my version of yesterday's antique Quilted Joy, Rose of Sharon quilt. Quilted Joy Too!
Hand appliqued and hand quilted. It is the star one of my newest classes where teach my method of almost no prep applique and also share antique quilts from the Starley Quilt Collection.

Yes, I did a lot of applique and hand quilting on this repro quilt! And yes, you can now purchase a PATTERN on my Etsy Shop.

Imagine spending a day creating a delightful quilt, learning applique, and drooling over beautiful antique quilts!

Day 4 - Hand Quilting Blogathon Cheddar Stars

I love recreating antiques in my collection and my miniature Cheddar Stars Over Moab is one of my favorites. Inspired by an antique star quilt in the Starley Collection. Little 3" Stars are foundation/ paper pieced by machine but the quilting is all done by hand.

The stars are small and the full miniature reproduction quilt comes in at just 19" x 24".
This pattern is available on my etsy shop and it is also available as a fun paperpiecing class. You'll learn how to paper piece and create your own wonky star patterns. You'll also learn tips for accurately recreating antique quilts. I'd love to come teach this at your shop or guild.

An action shot of picking out the perfect fabrics to recreate the original.

Even More 9 Patch Fun - Antique Quilts

Here's another block (Dolly Madison Star) that is designed in a 9 patch format and also has a nine patch in the center block. Isn't it interesting to see how different each of the four blocks look with the different color placement!

And here's my antique reproduction, Wonky Cheddar Stars. They are also pieced in a 9 patch format.

I've Got the Blues- More Antique Quilt Inspiration

I really enjoy recreating quilts from my collection and giving the old quilts new life. Here's my mini arrows with the antique inspiration quilt from the Starley Quilt Collection.

The reproduction is only 16" x 16". It was made as a donation for the Quilt Alliance fundraiser challenge. And I liked it so much that after donating it, I bought it back from the eBay auction. I do a trunk show lecture on "Rising to the Challenge" (Challenge Quilts) but I don't make a lot of quilts so rarely really let any go.

And look at that little center arrow. It is only 1 inch finished :)

Antique Basket Quilt - Revisited and Revamped

Generally, I look to my antique quilt collection for inspiration when making a new quilt. And while I often make close reproductions with repro fabrics, I also enjoy using bright and bold fabrics to give new life to old patterns.

This is a whimsical black, white, and hot pink quilt I made that was based on a single border element in an antique Princess Feather quilt in the Starley Quilt Collection. It is hand applique and hand quilted (in pink thread, to boot!)

And here is the antique inspiration

Antique Coxcomb & Currants Quilt and Modern Makeover Repro.

An 1850s coxcomb and currant variation - only one I have seen with the berries making a figure 8 around the combs. Also they only one I've seen with this interesting border combination. Starley quilt collection.

Love the border basket motif.

And it inspired me to create this applique repro block.

Here's a detail of the hand applique and hand quilting with some trapunto work as well.

And the full quilt repro quilt: Pennsylvania Posies for Paducah. Made for the Pilgrim-Roy Invitational Challenge to benefit the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. It did double duty as I donated the quilt and then purchased it back to share in my "Rising to the Challenge" trunk show as well as my "Everything Old is New Again/Learning from the past" trunk show. It is also available as a hand applique class.
