Day 16 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Starley Quilt Collection - More 9 Patch Fun

The 9 Patch is a very versatile block and one of the earliest patchwork blocks. Not a surprise that simple patchwork like 9 Patch, and 4 Patchwork, and single repeated blocks like hexagons were the first pieced blocks. It is common to see it set like this antique in pairs of nine 9 patches, aka Double 9 Patch blocks. These are little blocks.

Here's more from the early 9 Patch quilt. Look at the yummy green ivy sashing. The quilt dates to circa 1840. Starley Quilt Collection.

And the backing fabric is AMAZING! This beautiful floral pillar print in a China Blue/white colorway.
This column or pillar print was very popular in the 1820s. It was printed in about 20 different colorways or color combinations like this blue/white, red/white, tan (drab), a polychrome (multi-color), and much more.

P is for Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcase

P is for Pieced Pillowcases from Pennsylvania

This case is circa 1876 and has both faux/simulated patchwork and regular pieceing.
Center star section is faux patchwork aka cheater cloth and the border squares are pieced.

More piecing on the back. These patchwork and applique pillowcases are a uniquely Pennsylvania phenomenon.

Detail of a much earlier (1830s) Pennsylvania pillowcase also in my collection

Beautiful early fabrics and unusual textiles

The Starley Quilt Collection focuses on early quilts and fabrics (as in early to mid 1800s) and special quilts like early 1840s and 1850s signature quilts, fabulous applique featuring birds & blooms, and other interesting textiles.

This gorgeous detail is from a Pennsylvania pieced patchwork pillowcase from the 1830s. An uncommon textile and generally only seen in Pennsylvania.

And this is a piece of chintz fabric bound with woven tape binding from the 1830s. The disocactus fabric was a popular print and it is found on my dated 1842 signature album from New Jersey.

Here's another shot of the fabric and blue and white woven binding.

1840s Antique Wholecloth Quilt, Faux Patchwork, cheater cloth print

Wholecloth faux patchwork print quilt, Starley Quilt Collection. I've seen the print dated to the 1850s but I've seen it used in a Pennsylvania/NewJersey signature quilt signed and dated from 1843.
This print is especially wonderful with the exotic animal prints (that look so modern) surrounding the flower pots.

And talk about faux patchwork!! Look at this Nine-Patch block --all printed not sewn.

And the wonderful brown and blue backing.

Day 23 Treasure inside the Quilt - Antique Quilt in an Antique Quilt

I'll always think of  yesterday's X quilt as X marks the spot as it contained a hidden treasure: a glorious early chintz quilt in a wonderful urn pattern with a linen backing. Here's a close-up but be sure to also click on it to enlarge it and see all the detail. The ground of the stripe on either side of the urn is a fine picotage (delicate dots) and behind the urn is a diagonal stripe.

Here's more of the antique chintz in all its glory!

Look - the moment of discovery. Tune in tomorrow to see how I made the discovery ...
