I couldn't do a month of antique hand quilting without sharing this amazing antique Christmas Star quilt with some stunning hand quilting - now in the Starley Quilt Collection. Circa 1850.

Oh My Stars!! Antique Signature Quilt

Such a sparkly, glowing star quilt! Great condition and it is a signature quilt from Pennsylvania! And it is related to several other quilts that I or friends own. What more can you ask for? And it was a great deal to boot. Part of my Sign of the Times, Antique Quilt trunk show.

F is for French Star - Antique and Vintage French Star Quilts

I thought about sharing feathered friends (bird quilts) but remembered my French Star quilt collection which is perfect for this jaunt through the alphabet. French Star is another of my very favorite pattern and I share several in my Patterns Through Time trunk show. It is an uncommon pattern.

Unusual Antique Star Quilt

New to me quilt and new to me pattern.  Seems to be a combination of French Star and Sailors Joy patterns.

Set in a red 'garden maze' sashing/setting.

It has definitely seen better days but cool pattern and setting.

Antique Kaleidoscope Quilt -Antique Novelty Conversation Fabric

One of my very favorite quilts - kaleidoscope star. The pattern is Ships Wheel.
The quilt is circa 1890**, these steel engraving novelty prints are mostly from the 1880s.
**The top is c. 1890 but was minimally quilted a few years ago with a polyester batting. I've since unquilted it and removed the poofy poly but left the backing to protect the seams.

The fussy cutting, selective cutting is very impressive as is the careful piecing and placement. Look at the little fox, ferret, badger? in a hat. Even more impressive is the fact that the maker was using small pieces and many had to be pieced before they could be cut into diamonds.

This quilt is a tour de force of fussy cutting! And has more novelty or conversational prints than I've seen on any other quilt. Please be sure to click on the individual photos to see the details and all the amazing novelty or conversation prints.

Cats and Dogs on Quilts, oh my, Antique Novelty Prints

I know that can't really ALL be my favorite but a lot of them can be favorites! Gotta love this antique faux patchwork print (cheater cloth) with cats (and dogs) and wonderful madder orange paisleys. Part of my fun and educational antique quilt study class.

And the maker of this solid center tumbling block star quilt from PA  obviously really liked the fabric too.

There are a lot of other novelty prints used in the quilt including a calendar print dated 1881 (more about that one at a later date- calendar humor). And greek keys and several cheeky cherubs like this guy.

Antique Bethlehem Star -Month of Antique Quilt Treasures

Early Antique Bethlehem Star or Mathematical Star with appliques - Starley Quilt Collection, Antique Stars trunk show. Very unusual applique details.

This is a large quilt and that is a good clue to an early (old quilt)- the earlier/older, the bigger.

Beautiful fabrics in lovely muted, almost pastel tones.

Antique Tumbling Block Star - Month of Quilt Treasures

My antique tumbling block star quilt c. 1890 from the Kreider family of Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania.  It is unusual not only for its maker's careful color placement to make stars and cubes and match opposing  star points but most importantly for its center star of solid fabrics.  It is part of a small group of about 20  tumbling block star quilts found in Lancaster Co. each with a distinctive center block (and only the center block) composed of solid fabric as shown above.  This interesting niche group of tumbling block star quilts was discovered by my friend Greta Van Den Berg and luckily I was with her when she made the discovery.  I've since acquired several of my own.

Here is another star showing the careful matching of opposing star points - indigo print to indigo print, madder paisley to madder paisley.  Also note the floral quilting in the diamonds.

And here is the special center block with all solid fabrics -only star in the quilt with all solids.
