Day 30- Antique Whig Rose -31 Days of Antique Quilts - Hand Quilting

Tonight's antique quilt from the Starley Quilt Collection is another "best quilt" Whig Rose from Ohio, circa 1850s. Like my Quilted Joy, this one is a 9 block applique with NO negative space and is chockful of applique and intense hand quilting. And that border!! Isn't it delightful?

Check out the hand quilting! Close triple-rod quilting (three lines close together separated by similar sized space and repeated across the quilt). ***Note that the diagonal quilting goes right across the appliques.

Here's the same flower used in my repro quilt, Pennsylvania Posies for Paducah.

Month of Antique Quilts -Hand Quilting Day 24

Today's quilt is an antique red/green hand quilted quilt - an Oak Reel with a lovely swag and tassle border. Such a classic design. Circa 1850.
I don't think the maker was into hand quilting or maybe she was making it for a special occasion, like a wedding, and was on a tight schedule as there isn't much quilting (been there, done that). The quilt has unusual quilting - click on the picture below to enlarge and see details. There is a quilted pair of scissors above the swag and a set of spoons under the swag.

Day 2 - 31 Days of Hand Quilting

Day 2 of a glorious month of hand quilted quilts from the Starley Quilt Collection features a wonderful crib quilt that actually survived the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It predates the war and managed to make it through the conflict. Clearly it was made for a very loved child as shown by all the blocks full of hearts and flowers!

Here's one of the delightful heart blocks (see my version of this block in yesterday's post).

And lots of appliqued flowers.and great double-rodded (2 close rows) hand quilting. Enjoy. Remember click on the photos to enlarge and see details.

Dated 1864 Civil War Antique Quilt Potholder Quilt

Another amazing treasure from the New England Quilt Museum, a potholder quilt made for a Union soldier by ladies from Boston, Massachusetts. *Potholder is a method of quilt construction where each block is an individual mini quilt that is batted, backed, quilted and then bound. The mini quilts are then joined to create a large quilt.

Wonderful inking, drawing on this block made to comfort a Union soldier in the South.

Antique Bird Quilts

I seem to be a 'bird brain' when it comes to antique quilts (and modern and repro quilts too but that is for another day).  The first 2 photos are from my Quilted Joy/Rose of Sharon quilt, c. 1860 from Ohio.

Part of my "Birds and Blooms" antique quilt trunk show

This guy is being shot with cupid's arrow? From an 1850 crib quilt from Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

And this little charmer with the teeny tail feathers is from my Whig Rose crib quilt. **Note here is another example of a two step green (yellow and blue make green) but the yellow has gone in places leaving blue and the blue has dropped leaving a yellow/green.

Antique Eagle Quilt - Month of Antique Quilt Treasures

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Just a simple sharing of this fabulous 4 eagle quilt in  the Starley Antique Quilt Collection. Part of Birds and Blooms Lecture/ Trunk show (see the tab under banner photo for more details).

This quilt is from Southeastern Pennsylvania which is the main area the 4 block eagles are found. The other area is Ohio and that is due to westward migration. C. 1860 and a bit early for this setting.
It is the only antique eagle with tulip wreaths and vases. Formerly in the McCarl Collection.
The darker green used for the tulip stems, leaves, and vases was likely a synthetic dye and it has had a weird reaction (hazy stain around that fabric).

Antique Remake Rose of Sharon Quilt - Daily Antique Quilt Treasures

(Topic for this week is Antique Bird Quilts). This is Quilted Joy a reproduction of a joyful antique Rose of Sharon quilt in my collection (see below).  Made for the American Quilt Study Group's Civil War Quilt Study and is part of the traveling exhibit. Right now it is on display at the Stillwater Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Hand applique and hand quilting.
This quilt is available as a hand applique class/workshop and the antique quilt is the star of my antique quilt trunk show: Birds and Blooms showcasing amazing mid 1800s antique applique quilts.
Quilted Joy, 2014, Sandra Starley, 31 x 31

Close-ups of the repro (above) and the antique (below). I reduced the block size and number and scaled down some details (3 leaves on Rose stems instead of 5) but tried to faithfully recreate the folk art charm and exuberance.

This is probably the happiest quilt I own or have ever seen!  This has to be what JOY looks like when it is quilted. This unknown quilter really upped the ante and filled every inch with applique and quilting.  Can you tell I love this quilt?  If you look closely, you will see that it is a 9 block, Rose of Sharon quilt with filler bird and grape vine applique and fancy floral borders.  **Note, this is an antique quilt from 1855**
To learn more about the history of the Rose of Sharon pattern, please see my article  http://www.discoverypub.com/columns/Quilts/1215_Quilts/index.html

The border is over the top with all the different flowers -irises, tulips, etc. I really like how the 3 stemmed flower groups have been stitched to make them into a basket. And the two different birds are delightful and the red birds seem to be enjoying the blue berries. They do look delicious. There are a lot of embroidered details (stitching on appliques, etc.)--so much to take in. Enjoy-I sure am.
If you have seen a similar quilt, please let me know as I haven't found anything close and neither has the dealer.

**I'm so happy to be sharing these treasures with you and participating for the 3rd year in the 31 Day Blog Challenge. Click on the photo to go to the main page and connect with others sharing their quilts (old and new) and other creative work. Thanks Cheryl Sleboda for hosting this again and inspiring us to share.

Day 8 and post #100 1858 Heart Quilt

This beautiful signature quilt was made for Sister McAlister of the Willett St. Methodist Episcopal church in New York City. She was a founder of the Sunday School program and her husband was the Reverend at the church. She was born in England and he in Ireland. It is dated 1858, they were both in their 30s. Full of love for Sister McAlister.

This block's sentiment is from the Bible 1 Peter 4: 12-13
"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy." Signed by Almira Losee, NY 1858 (quilt made in New York City for Methodist Episcopalian Sunday School Leader Esther McAlister.

I adore how this quilt literally exudes love - look at how many blocks have multiple hearts in them!

And if you look very closely, you'll see there are hidden hearts in the centers of the 2 wreaths on the right. Lots of Methodist Episcopal hymns and Bible verses and other expressions of love.

Would anyone like to do this as a pattern? Perhaps as a sew-along?

Stars - Bloggers Quilt Fest

Here is one of my favorite quilts, a Bethlehem Star, circa 1850 from Pennsylvania.  One can't help but smile when looking at this quilt!  Part of my antique quilt trunk show, Quilt Masterpieces.
From the eBay listing: "An amazing rising sun quilt with satellite stars and deep blue print background. I love the way this quilt was designed with the blue background. The center star floats against a blue background sky."

Wouldn't you just love to meet the person who made this quilt, one brave quiltmaker as this pattern is not for the faint of heart.  Here's a detail:

And another, love that yummy turkey red print and the saturated blue :

Note:  the quilt top is from around 1850 BUT it was finished much more recently probably in the 1940's or 50's.  That is when it acquired that wild yellow backing.
