Day 10 Antique Quilt Festival - Month of Antique Quilts

Today's antique quilt is a Red and Green Antique Oak Leaf or Reel quilt with hand applique and lots of straight-line hand quilting.

This Reel has nice sashing and great diamond in square corner posts and FIVE borders to really frame the blocks.

The full quilt, a quite formal red and green quilt.

More of the quilt. And the single block/quiltlet is my repro version made for a potholder project for Pam Weeks. Potholder quilts are constructed of blocks that are individually quilted and bound

Here's a close-up of my little quilt. Click on photo to enlarge. Hand applique and hand quilted.

Here's my repro block in Pam Week's potholder quilt (middle, right side). I'm hoping her book on antique potholder quilts will be out soon/

Post 9 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Antique Red and Green Signature Quilt

Thanks for joining me for another antique quilt. Hope you are enjoying seeing all these different antique quilts and learning a bit of history too. Please leave me a comment and let me know if there is a special pattern or design or color scheme you'd like to see. I just might have what you are looking for in my collection.

Red and Green Signature quilt from Easton, Pennsylvania. An interesting and unusual combination of blocks.

Presentation quilt inscribed and dated: "Easton PA 1846. Presented to Solon Chapin by his Mother in law Mrs. Hocker 1846". This is the presentation block: (click to enlarge) and read

This block was made as a memorial for her friend who had died during the making of the quilt at aged 86.

Solon was a famous bridge architect and lived in Easton Pennsylvania.
Here is the full quilt which is large, 98" x 100":

Day 8 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Antique Red and Green Crib Quilt

Thanks again for visiting my blog. Here's a small treasure for you.
Such a charming antique crib quilt with a center Lily, Tulip, or Peony block (goes by many names).

Great chintz borders too. Starley quilt collection.

Here's a close-up of two of the fab fabrics. Click on the photo to see it close-up. The green is a two-step dye (yellow + blue = green) and in several spots the yellow has gone away leaving blue. The red is a Turkey Red - a fabric which required many steps to create.

Day 7 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Red and Green Applique Quilt

Thanks again for following along and viewing and commenting. Y'all help make this fun.

Today's quilt is an unique (so far) version of coxcomb and currant pattern, circa 1850. The only one I have seen with the berries making a figure 8 around the combs. Also they only one I've seen with this interesting border combination. Starley quilt collection.

You've got to love all those dots!!! And that limey green. Such a dotty and happy quilt!

And the interesting border with the 4 floral vase arrangement (and more dots) and the four petalled circles. Simply exquisite.

Day 6 - Monthlong Antique Quilt Festival - Antique Red and Green Peony or Lily Quilt

I'm having such fun sharing these treasures. Glad you are enjoying them! Thank you for your comments- keep them coming. It makes it much more fun.

Today's quilt is a formal Peony or Lily quilt made informal with the folky, free-form placement of the stems and leaves.

I love how the top one is quite folky while the 2nd one is much more calm and linear.

The full quilt. It is quite large and again seems so formal until you zoom in on the details. It is actually quite charming. A graphic red & green lily or peony quilt that is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted, with early fabrics dating from 1830-1850.   This quilt is from the pre- civil war era.

It features a sampler of quilting motifs including sunflowers.

And maple leaves.

And one more fun little flower.

Post 5: A Month Full of Antique Quilts - Antique Red and Green Caesar's Crown Quilt

I love sharing these antique quilts with you. Thank you for all the nice comments so far, I really appreciate hearing from you.

Here's another of my favorites (yes, almost all of these are my favorites - are you shocked?), a Red and Green Caesar's Crown from Southeastern Pennsylvania, circa 1860.

Be sure to click on the first picture to see it up close! It is all hand pieced NOT appliqued. Look at how sharp those points are!

My favorite feature of this pattern is the secondary design created when the blocks are set straight together with no sashing. Do you see the white cross or 4 white bells? You may have to squint a bit.

You probably can see the cross now, I hope. Such a great pattern.

Here it is hanging out with 2 more antique Caeser's Crowns that are also from Southeastern PA. The others are signature quilts.

Post 4 of the Monthlong Antique Quilt Festival - Red and Green Signature Star

4th post of the antique quilt extravaganza!!! And how could I do an antique quilt festival or a Red and Green event without featuring this amazing quilt? I simply could not!

Not only is this quilt made of red, white, and green fabrics; it is literally a red, white, and green quilt since it has family surnames of Scarlett, White, and Green! Isn't that cool?

The main surname or last name is Worrall, the Quaker family for whom the quilt was made. It also features wonderful inked drawings like the hand throwing a cupid's arrow into a heart (below).

The quilt is a genealogy record of a Quaker family from Chester County, Pennsylvania and was made for Enoch Worrall and Mary Hoopes Worrall and is dated 1850.

Day 3 - Monthlong Antique Quilts - Red and Green Birds and Baskets

Day 3 of our Antique Quilt Festival. All of these quilts are part of my own antique quilt collection. By the way, I love to share these antique quilt treasures through in person and now online presentations. Feel free to contact me about presenting for your guild, quilt history group, group of friends.

One of my favorites (part of my Birds and Blooms lecture) is this on point basket, likely from New York State, circa 1850/60. You can't go wrong with Birds and Baskets and Hearts!

Isn't this a funky and cute little guy! Gotta love his odd tree branch feet.

Here is the full quilt. Such an elegant quilt. The baskets are arranged to drape down over both sides of the bed.

Day 2 - A Month of Antique Quilts - Red and Green French Star

So happy to share my quilts with you this holiday season. Here is one of my newer additions to my Red and Green Collection and more importantly my French Star Collection.

Isn't it yummy!!
And look at all that fabulous double rodded (two lines close together) hand quilting!
Here's the full quilt with the fabulous paisley fabric sashing and border which adds wonderful movement!

December Quilting Blog-athon Time - Red and Green Antique Quilts

Cheryl (aka Muppin) Sleboda's Annual December 31 Days of Blogging Monthlong Blog-athon prompts me once again to post. Thanks Cheryl for the motivation. This is my 6th year joining in and blogging every day!

Let's try for a month of Red and Green Antique Quilts.

Here's a charmer, a circa 1850 signature quilt likely from the Philadephia, Pennsylvania area which was the hotbed for signature quilts.

Intricate Oakleaf pattern with a delightful swag and bow border.

Many of the reds have damage due to the dyeing process -probably a metal that was used to create a black stripe on this print.

Quilt Block Mania Halloween Blocks Galore

My contribution for this month's Quilt Block Mania's frightening Halloween fabric festival was such a delight to create. It is a mini sampler quilt all on its own with a Candy Corn block, 2 pumpkins, and a Wicked Witch hat. Four 6" blocks in one pattern. It will look amazing paired with lots of its friends from the Quilt Block Mania Halloween block bonanza or by itself for a ghoulish pillow or mini quilt.

Fabric Requirements:  Halloween Scraps
I used 24 different Halloween fabrics, only repeating the green and purple backgrounds and 2 fabrics next to the pumpkin stems. You can use up your Halloween scraps to make your blocks. ***Note: for ease of cutting and piecing, the blocks strips are all cut 6.5" wide so charm packs won't work. Jelly rolls, layer cakes, fat quarters, or 1/8 or 1/4 cut, or your scrap pile will work.

CUTTING Instructions:
(Summary: each block has 5 strips: 4 cut 1.75" H x 6.5" W & 1 cut 1.5 H x 6.5" W)

Block strip sets:
Cut 16 strips 1.75" H x 6.5" W

September Edition of 2020 Monthly Color Challenge

Looking for another fun block? You are in luck! Jen Shaffer of Patterns By Jen has created another cool one. Very fun to make and perfect for an Autumn quilt, wallhanging, or fall pillow. See bottom of post for the link to the pattern - free during September.

Here's my version made with a fall batik and a Autumn word print. I do love a good text fabric!

12" Fun Fall Flying Geese

This month's inspiration is the coolest bird! The Cinnamon Teal - photographed in Utah near the Great Salt Lake by Matthew Pendleton. Photo from the MacaulayLibrary.org

https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/46359371

The block involves a great way to easily make multiple Flying Geese in an efficient way. You only need to cut 1 geese piece and 4 background squares to create 4 Flying Geese. I usually make scrappy blocks and make each Goose separately but this is definitely an amazing way to make a FLOCK of GEESE of the same fabrics and do it quickly!

You mark the sewing line (1/4" from both sides of small squares center) and stack the first 2 squares on the large geese piece. After sewing on both lines, you cut the unit in half along the middle line. Press the seams and you'll have 2 heart shaped units. You add another marked square to each and again sew on both sides.

Cut again on the middle line, press, trim, and voila! You have 4 Flying Geese! Pair them with 2 more squares of the background fabric and you've got this month's block. Easy peasy and lots of fun.

Pro Trimming Tip: use the 45-degree angle mark on your ruler to keep the geese flying right. Before making a cut - ensure that there is at least a  1/4" seam allowance at the FG point so he doesn't get chopped off. Then move on to trimming the sides and base.
