Red & Green Antique Quilt Extravaganza - Day 20 Rolling Stone quilt

Rolling Stone signature quilts were very popular in German communities in South Eastern Pennsylvania in the 2nd half of the 19th century (1850-1900). This one is in my collection, Sandra Starley Antique quilt collection and is part of my Antique Signature Quilt Trunk Show as well as my Quilts Stars, Quilt Masterpieces, and Patterns Through Time Lectures/classes.

Here's a close-up of the fabrics and the block for Levi G. Laudermilch. Likely the next generation was using the surname Laudermilk.

This quilt is the only one I've seen so far with an alternating star block.

Red & Green Festival, Antique French Star, Day 17

Such and elegant red and green quilt, this French Star hails from Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Part of the Sandra Starley Antqiue Quilt Collection and shared in my Patterns ThroughTime Lecture as well as my Antique Stars, Quilt Masterpieces Trunk show or quilt study class.

An uncommon pattern, likely due to the fussy piecing and expert skills required to make the pattern.

Isn't that border the perfect finish!

Day 16 Red & Green Antique Quilt Festival

Can't share Red and Green without sharing this Red and Green antique signature quilt beauty from the Sandra Starley Collection. It is one of the stars of my Antique Signature Quilt trunk show.

Dated 1850 from Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Quaker family, made for Enoch and Mary Worrall.

Fun fact - it is literally a red, white, and green quilt as there as people with the names of Scarlett, White, and Green on the quilt.

Look - it is a Christmas wreath on my circa 1850 signature crib quilt from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

A true Civil War survivor quilt

Antique Red & Green Quilt Festival - Birds & Blooms Day14

Of course, no Red & Green Festival would be complete without my favorite quilt - Quilted Joy!
I love the birds and berries and blooms! It is the star of my Birds and Blooms trunk show of antique quilts.

It is a 9 Block Rose of Sharon quilt with a fab floral border and very little negative space.

Day 13 Red & Green Antique Quilt Festival

Love the setting triangle 'border' appliques on this mid 1800s basket quilt from NewYork state

The maker did a beautiful job on piecing and applique and had a great eye for detail. She evened a teeny piping strip on the binding.

Red & Green Antique Signature Quilt, Day 12 Quilt Extravaganza

Unusual red and green signature album quilt. Sign of the Times trunk show and class.  Dated 1879 signature quilt from Pennsylvania (Tuscarora, Bradford Co.)  Some of the family names  are Hall, Montgomery, Chamberlain, Lake, and Wood.

Love this rose with a simple sentiment, Forget me not, Forget me never -Em Wood

A number of the blocks have very small buttonhole applique stitching and fine chain stitched stems. In addition to the variety of mostly floral motifs, it also has a variety of quilting designs.

Pot of Flowers, More Red & Green, Day 11

My antique 4 block "Pot Of Flowers" Quilt. In 2012, I had the wonderful experience of seeing an exhibit of about 30 antique examples of this pattern at the annual Seminar of the American Quilt Study Group. The exhibit was coordinated by Connie Nordstrom who has authored a paper on the pattern in the 2002 Uncoverings. The pattern has been popular since the 1850s.
The pattern is most often used in a 4 block setting like this one.  All have the same arrangement of vase with large flower at top center, 5 smaller flowers, and 2 hanging flowers with a similar one on the pot. And all have lots of appliqued dots!

To see more of the AQSG exhibit, visit Barbara Brackman's blog post on the subject

Farmers Fancy, Red & Green, Day 10

I know this doesn't look like a Red & Green quilt and it isn't a traditional R & G but I believe the center "flowers" were red & green when it was made. The outer border may have also been red. There is a fair amount of red & green still visible though the cheddar definitely runs the show.

Thought I'd mix up the concept of red & green a bit ;) Pattern is Farmers Fancy and the quilt was most likely made in West Virginia or Virginia.

Princess Feathers -Day 7 Red & Green Antique Quilt Fest

Today's Red & Green pattern is Prince's or Princess Feather block. Here's two of the blocks.

The green is a fugitive or unstable dye. It would have been a standard green like you see on the other days' posts. Here is the fab basket border.

The full 4-block quilt. Note 2 blocks spin clockwise and 2 spin counter clockwise.

Whig Rose -Day 6 of Month Long Red & Green Antique Quilt Fest

Detail of Antique 9 block Whig Rose Quilt from Ohio. Starley Collection.
Look at the folky basket border! It has a wide binding to match the inner framing border.

And the triple rod (3 line) hand quilting that goes straight across the appliques. And of course, the cheddar orange.

The full quilt- there is no negative space so it is a bit hard to see that it is composed of 9 blocks.
