It has some great quilting in the borders

Unfortunately, many of the Turkey reds have damage. Have you heard the term "popping?" This is what it looks like. Like someone took tiny scissors or a hold punch and cut circles out of the red fabrics. It is likely the design had a motif that was outlined in black and the black is corrosive, caustic and eats away at the red.

The blue and white in a staggered, zigzag setting is quite wonderful!

Mary B. Cory's block has a charming equestrian (horsey) novelty print. Commonly seen at the turn of the century in Kansas.

Antique Signature Quilt - Southeastern Pennsylvania. Rolling Stone with alternative color placement that makes it look like a different pattern. Part of Sign of the Time lecture/trunk show.

Revisiting Antique Virginia Crib Quilt

Here is my reproduction of yesterday's crib quilt from c. 1845 Virginia.

I can't get too much of this most charming crib quilt from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. Circa 1845. I hope you agree. Such an amazing quilt that survived the Civil War!

1848 Barnegat, New Jersey Signature Quilt

Some details of the funky, folky, signature quilts. Haven't seen this tulip flower/leaf and heart block pattern before. Starley Collection. Blocks have a signer's name in a signature stamp and a 2nd stamp with "Barnegat." Also haven't seen two stamps per block like that before.

This block also has cross-stitch initials.

Such beautiful fabrics.

Quilted with Love - 1858 New York City Antique Quilt

Some quilts are simple or non-descript but others are much more interesting and full of information. This beautiful quilt is one of those with quite a story to tell.

Made for Esther McAlister, a Methodist Episcopalian Sunday School teacher in New York City in 1858.

My collection specializes in unusual and early quilts and signature quilts in particular. I have a lot of antique signature quilts from the 1840s and 1850s. These quilts are time capsules and a beautiful way to learn American history.

Cheater Cloth in Antique Quilts - Part 3

Cheater Cloth Part Two

Did I mention that I really like cheater cloth, faux patchwork, preprinted patchwork? Well, I really do! See yesterday's post for several more examples from my collection.

This super fun calendar print from 1881 and this sections feature September

 These two are from the late 1830s to the early 1840s. I found this exact print on a friend's signature quilt from 1845.

Preprinted Patchwork - Cheater Cloth - Faux Patchwork

You may have noticed that I really like preprinted patchwork, aka "cheater cloth." This is fabric that is printed/designed to look as if it has been pieced. It has been around for a long time, since at least the 1830s. Here are a few from the Starley Collection.

One of my all-time favorites is this cat and dog print circa 1880.

Another from that same time period, 1876

And the star with hexagons is also a cheater print from the 1880s.

And this Tumbling Block Star is from the 1830s.
