 The last day of our monthlong celebration of antique red and green quilts from the Starley Antique Quilt Collection features a variety of Birds and Blooms  - stars of my virtual/online trunk show: Birds and Blooms.

Antique Quilts - Month of Antique Quilts Day 24 - Red and Green Antique Quilts

Day 24 of the antique quilt extravaganza features a wonderful antique friendship crib quilt from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

 

The Red and Green antique quilt even has a Christmas wreath :)

Here's the full quilt - it was obviously made for a beloved baby or child. Starley Quilt Collection.

I was inspired to make a miniature replica of the quilt.

 

I'm putting the final touches on the pattern and it will be released in a few days in my Etsy shop. Day 2 - 31 Days of Hand Quilting

Day 2 of a glorious month of hand quilted quilts from the Starley Quilt Collection features a wonderful crib quilt that actually survived the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It predates the war and managed to make it through the conflict. Clearly it was made for a very loved child as shown by all the blocks full of hearts and flowers!

Here's one of the delightful heart blocks (see my version of this block in yesterday's post).

Antique Love Birds and Valentines Quilt Makeover

Detail of Virginia crib quilt, circa 1850, a true Civil War survivor. Since this bird is on a crib quilts with lots of hearts and flowers, I believe he is being shot with cupid's arrow rather than one from a hunter.

I have recreated the antique quilt twice, one in a traditional miniature version and another in a modern makeover for the Riley Blake fabric challenge. You can see the bird made modern below, bottom, right.

And here is one of the antique Valentine Hearts and Flowers - and the mod version is above, top, right.  Look at that beautiful hand quilting - double rodding (double lines).

Antique Bird Quilts

I seem to be a 'bird brain' when it comes to antique quilts (and modern and repro quilts too but that is for another day).  The first 2 photos are from my Quilted Joy/Rose of Sharon quilt, c. 1860 from Ohio.

And this little charmer with the teeny tail feathers is from my Whig Rose crib quilt. **Note here is another example of a two step green (yellow and blue make green) but the yellow has gone in places leaving blue and the blue has dropped leaving a yellow/green.

Antique Bird Quilt- Civil War Survivor- 31 days of antique quilt treasures

Sending Holiday Cheer with this bird and basket block from my 1850 Virginia Crib Quilt. The quilt was clearly made for a beloved child. Amazing this quilt survived the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

My miniature reproduction, Virginia is for Lovers, size 16 x 16 alongside the antique original.  It is hand appliqued (the little baskets are only 1.5" tall) and hand quilted.

This is an utterly charming album crib quilt from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, purchased from a VA auction.  It has 12 blocks (9" blocks), each featuring a different design including hearts, wreaths, potted flowers, tulips, a bird on branch, and cut-out chintz flowers, eight blocks with stitched name or initials in the teeniest cross stitch.
Provenance: Descended in the Smith family of Waynesboro, Augusta Co., VA.

I'm thinking of reproducing it in a smaller scale and trying to decide on close fabrics or crazy wild?

I haven't seen any other album quilts with so many heart motifs.  I find the block with the bird (photo 1) in the tree getting shot with an arrow a bit strange yet kind of cute.  

Antique Christmas Wreath Day 23

Sending Holiday Cheer with this floral wreath from my 1850 Virginia Crib Quilt. The quilt was clearly made for a beloved child. Amazing this quilt survived the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

And another lovely floral motif from the VA crib quilt. And yes, it is a "signature" quilt but mostly initials instead of full names. And done in teeny cross stitch. be sure to click on the wreath photo to enlarge it and see the little stitches.
