Antique Quilt - schoolhouse Bloggers Fest - Fall 2010

Antique House (schoolhouse) Quilt

c. 1890 72" x 72"

Thanks again to Amy for hosting another quilters blog fest where we feature our favorite quilts.
This is a current favorite- a school house block quilt. I like the funky piecing (the maker had some interesting sewing techniques) but was very careful to choose small scale fabrics which don't overwhelm the blocks as they are midsized about 9 inches. The 3rd picture shows the one schoolhouse (1st block, top row) that was done in a reverse color scheme-just too fun. Enjoy.
Don't forget to visit my other blog to see my miniature pink and black puzzle quilt

  1. I love your antique school house quilt. It is a nice chance to see authentic fabrics used so long ago. It would be fun to create a remake of this in reproduction fabrics. I enjoyed learning about it.

  12. Thanks for stopping by my blog and introducing yourself, I agree, it's always fun to find other quilters in your area =0)

I love your blog. I started quilting because I fell in love with an antique quilt that was waaaaay beyond my budget and I thought maybe I could make my own.

It's still a little beyond my capabilities so I am still practicing.

  20. Sandra, thank you for stopping by my blog and inviting me to visit. I am doing so now and am most definitely following you. There was only one great grandmother in my family who quilted, and unfortunately we lived to far apart for her to teach me. But she inspired me, and I am lucky to still own some of her quilts (very simple nine-patch). When I read your description of this quilter's "funky" piecing, I couldn't help but think about my own great grandmother. Seems to me these quilters weren't as stuck on perfection as we seem to be these days. I am just as guilty, but am learning to give myself permission to enjoy the process first and seek perfection secondly.

I am so glad to have "found" you, and will contact you privately. But for the public's general knowledge, could you please tell us (maybe in a blog post), if you are able to do any appraising based on photographs? I mean, you're kind of far away, and I'd like to pick your brain on some blocks that were given to me. I don't need a certificate, just an idea of the value of blocks like these and what would be the best way to use them. I don't know if there is anyone out there with similar questions.

Anyway, I'm following your blog, so will be looking out, in case you are able to post on the subject. Thank you!

  36. Nice of you to share on Two Blogs. I like the antique quilts, I have only one but it's not that old! A double wedding ring, hand pieced and quilted made during my lifetime from my old clothes by a neighbor lady who asked my mom for her scraps. My friend has a quilt to be appraised too so I wonder about photo identification as well.

  38. What a wonderful school house quilt- I love the individual blocks and the sense of fun of the maker who switched one of the blocks.
What an interesting job you do to appraise quilts- we don't see very many of old quilts around this area so I love seeing ones that are antique.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Regards,

  42. This is so beautiful! There is something to be said for quilts that have only a few colours. It allows the people looking to concentrate more on the work that went into making them I think.

    Thaks for sharing this quilt.

  43. Oh yes the schoolhouse block (especially the antique quilts) using two colors are also a favorite! thanks for sharing this wonderful quilt.
