Patterns Through Time - Antique Quilt Trunk Show

In March I was so happy to share my antique quilts at the Sew On and Sew Forth Quilt Retreat run by Amy McClellan of Under The Garden Moon. I presented my Patterns Through Time trunk show where I share at least a dozen different quilt patterns with 2 different examples of each pattern. For example. a 1890s Rocky Road to Kansas and a 1930s version. I discuss the pattern and its history and explain the differences and similarities between the two examples.  I also cover general information on quilt history and quilt dating.

3 examples of Caesers Crown from the 1800s - middle and right ones are signature quilts.

Patterns range from common 9 patch blocks to the very uncommon French Stars shown above. Top quilt is from 1870s, made in Pennsylvania. Lower quilt is from the Ruby McKim pattern and is from the 1940s/50s.

These little house blocks (3 x 6) are just too cute

Such fun and easy piecing- rectangles and squares for the main section.

And diagonal squares to make the roof. Great instructions for everything. I used bright and happy batiks for the blocks and Carrie Bloomston's Newsprint fabric for the background. I really like the combination of b/w and batiks and of course, I had to use text fabric for the TEXT IT project.

The next step was to decide how to add the text. Here was my auditioning. I decided to use chenille yarn and hand couch the yarn to create "home". I haven't couched in years, I've going to have to do more! The pattern uses bias strips for this lettering and a number of other great techniques for lettering. It includes 7!! different alphabets, a delightful variety of fonts/styles even a alphabet composed of English paper pieced hexagons. You will love all the fun projects - 10 in all.

I'm an avid antique quilt collector, researcher, and historian. I enjoy sharing my antique quilt collection via the blog, facebook, Instagram, etc. under Textile Time Travels. But I LOVE sharing my quilts in the cloth, in person with quilt guilds, shops, quilt retreats, etc I specialize in early quilts from the 1800s, both applique and signature quilts, as well as museum quality pieces.

Double Disappearing Nine Patch Block - Cross

This is my miniature Cross Quilt top - which finishes at only 10 inches. I think it will be my new February and Valentine's Day quilt or maybe a holiday pillow.

I started with 2 1/2 inch strips instead of the recommended 5 inches so I'm the crazy tiny piecing person. Since this pattern is a variation on the Disappearing 9 Patch block, I started off making 9 Patches. It takes two 9 Patches to create one Cross block and one supporting block.

Here I was playing with the fun design options with this pattern. There are several different ways to arrange the Cross blocks and the background block.

Red & Green Antique Quilt Month - 1858 Signature Quilt

Today's offering is a mostly red quilt but it has some red and green blocks. Dated 1858 and made in New York City for a beloved Sunday School teacher, Sister Esther McAlister. Part of my Sign of the Times Antique Signature Quilt trunk show.

 Nice laurel leaves above and a wreath below.

 Isn't it an amazing demonstration of the love for their Sunday School teacher!
