1876 Centennial FAbrics -Antique Quilt

Details from my 1880s Hexagon Medallion quilt that includes to 1876 US Centennial fabrics. 1st  is the 13 colony stripe dated 1776-1876 with Liberty Bell. If it looks familiar - you probably have seen the reproduction from a few years ago.

The other Centennial print is this flag pattern. It was also reproduced.

More Antique Nine Patch Quilts

Today's Nine Patch Quilt is actually faux patchwork, preprinted patchwork, aka cheater cloth from about 1840. Cheater cloth is not a new thing. And doesn't the fabric look like modern with the animal prints.

More of the same preprinted patchwork

And my favorite part of the fabric is this potted rose!

P is for Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcase

P is for Pieced Pillowcases from Pennsylvania

This case is circa 1876 and has both faux/simulated patchwork and regular pieceing.
Center star section is faux patchwork aka cheater cloth and the border squares are pieced.

More piecing on the back. These patchwork and applique pillowcases are a uniquely Pennsylvania phenomenon.

Detail of a much earlier (1830s) Pennsylvania pillowcase also in my collection

Antique Hexagon Delight -- Hexagon Quilt Madness

My 1880s Antique Hexagon Medallion quilt has so many wonderful fabrics. Here are some of my favorites. I especially like the faux or simulated needlepoint flower (black background) and the purple pansy next to it. And of course, the young man.

And there's the young man's friend below and the poor sad bird with the chopped off head :(

The musician may be part of the same fabric too. The bird is part of a faux patchwork crazy quilt print from the 1880s and their is another cheater print right below. There are also a couple of Centennial 1876 prints in the quilt. Enjoy!

A Month of Antique Quilt Treasures -Day 6

More late 1800s novelty fabrics in an almost charm triangle quilt with thousands of pieces.
Fun fussy cut bird with shirtings.

And a delightful mailbox conversation/novelty print.

The full quilt -that's a LOT of 1/2 square triangles!

Remember I said to always look for Centennial prints in late 1800s charm style quilts -- found one. Clever plaid print created by using Centennial in horizonal lines and 1776 1876 in vertical.

And most late 1800s charm type quilts have equestrian novelty prints -score! A horse print and see the horse shoes above them on the left?

31 days of Antique quilt treasures - Day 4 more novelty printed patchwork

That blue butterfly is part of an 1880s faux crazy quilt fabric below. Scroll down for the full quilt.
Such a great fabric with simulated stitching and crazy quilt motifs.

Love these figures and of course the bird and look at the blue stripe on the bottom row is another printed patchwork, cheater print.

And the center fabric below with the Liberty Bell is another 1876 Centennial print. Remember to always look for them in later 1800s charm style quilt.

The full quilt -what a beautiful hexagon medallion, circa 1885.

The fabric is a pre-printed patchwork, also known as faux patchwork or cheater cloth.

Here's more of it - see the shield

And there is more below: 2 strips with paisley print. There were a lot of faux patchwork fabrics printed in the 1880s.

Day 16 (47) Centennial Prints

1876 Centennial Prints are often found in 1880s and 90s quilts - if you look closely. Many are dated 1876 or bear the dates of 1776 and 1876.

This Centennial cheater print - preprinted patchwork is dated 1776 and 1876 and came in a red colorway and a brown one too.

Here it is in my 1880 Log cabin quilt - click on the picture to enlarge and see the date on the Liberty Bell.

And more of it in the Log Cabin.

And this is a literal "Centennial" print with the word Centennial and the dates of 1776 and 1876 forming a window grid. Again be sure to click and enlarge.

And the red hexagon is the center is dated centennial print from 1876 with 1776- 1876, the  Liberty bell and the names of the original colonies.

1880 Hexagon Medallion with Novelty Prints; Antique Quilt

I'm revisiting the quilt featured in the Cupids in quilts valentine's day post.    Here is the center with a great bird from a cheater cloth/printed patchwork crazy quilt fabric (the fabric was used many times in the quilt).  And if you look closely you'll find a centennial 1876 flag print (don't forget to click on photos to enlarge them).

Here is the full quilt, love the graphic nature of hexagon medallions with careful color placement and this is a real triumph of both art and workmanship.  Circa 1880 in the charm style although with repeats (mostly fussy cut from different parts of novelty/cheater cloth fabrics).  It has lots of wonderful unusual novelty prints and I'll share a few in this posting.   You can scroll down to the prior post or click on the link above to see the cupid fabrics.

Probably the most important fabric in the quilt is this dated centennial print from 1876 with 1776- 1876, the  Liberty bell and the names of the original colonies.

Next we find this charming couple and another bird and on the middle of the bottom row another printed patchwork print (see how it looks like a piece of sewn patchwork).  The 1880's were the heyday for such fabrics.

Next we find another person in a lovely striped outfit and a simulated needlepoint flower and look closely, that  flower is from a printed patchwork imitation crazy quilt fabric.

Centennial 1876 -- 1000 Pyramids Quilt

Circa 1880 “1000 Pyramids” quilt. 74 x 85”. Hand quilted. Lots of interesting novelty or conversation prints.
Love, love, this novelty of a girl posting her letter and the mailman picking it up. One of the all time most charming novelties. And there is a sweet shamrock and a red berry? ditsy.  Remember:  click on the pictures to enlarge.

Of special note is the centennial print with interlocking dates of 1776 and 1876 and CENTENNIAL; printed for the 1876 celebration.  Even with the tear and mend, it made this quilt a winner.

And of course, there is a horse, so often found in quilts of the era with novelty prints, also 2 different stars, a horseshoes.  And lovely little branches with heart shaped leaves are too sweet.  As I mentioned in my last post, plaids both printed and woven are oft found in early quilts.

And here's another piece with a great bird, horseshoes again, stars, little trees?, asterisks *, etc.

Here is more of the quilt (about a quarter), enjoy. Don't the random cheddar orange pieces make the quilt sparkle.  Not a charm quilt but there are a lot of different fabrics.

Not very wordy this time but please let me know if you have any questions or want to see more photos and I'll will help you out.
