Antique Hand Quilting Blogathon - Hexagon Medallion Day 14

You may have noticed I like antique hexagon quilts. This hexagon medallion from the Starley Antique Quilt Collection is full of wonderful novelty prints. The hand quilting is the traditional outline around every single hexagon.

Look at all the wonderful novelty prints!! The bird above and flower below are from a crazy quilt cheater print.

That pink/red hexagon with the bell is an 1876 Centennial print (made to celebrate the Centennial of the United States, 1776-1876). Remember the 1976 Bi-centennial hoopla? Well, the Centennial was a huge event as well.

The full quilt! Love the rounds of color. So well done.

1876 Centennial Log Cabin

Antique Log Cabin quilt featuring dated 1876 Centennial fabric, part of the Starley Quilt Collection.
It features the brown Centennial cheater cloth on the right side of the picture. Fabric was printed to celebrate America's Centennial (100 years) in 1876 and it has 1776 and 1876 in the print.

More of the quilt along with the red colorway of the 1876 Centennial cheater print - such a cool fabric.

More of the fab fabrics including the cheater as well as a fun novelty print with horseshoes and dice.

Even more wonderful prints.

Technically this is a summer spread or coverlet because it does not have 3 layers. No separate backing layer or any batting BUT it was sewn on foundation fabric squares so it has a "back" and it is bound with no raw edges.

More Antique Nine Patch Quilts

Today's Nine Patch Quilt is actually faux patchwork, preprinted patchwork, aka cheater cloth from about 1840. Cheater cloth is not a new thing. And doesn't the fabric look like modern with the animal prints.

More of the same preprinted patchwork

And my favorite part of the fabric is this potted rose!

Cheater Cloth Part Two

Did I mention that I really like cheater cloth, faux patchwork, preprinted patchwork? Well, I really do! See yesterday's post for several more examples from my collection.

This super fun calendar print from 1881 and this sections feature September

These two are from the late 1830s to the early 1840s. I found this exact print on a friend's signature quilt from 1845.

Preprinted Patchwork - Cheater Cloth - Faux Patchwork

You may have noticed that I really like preprinted patchwork, aka "cheater cloth." This is fabric that is printed/designed to look as if it has been pieced. It has been around for a long time, since at least the 1830s. Here are a few from the Starley Collection.

One of my all-time favorites is this cat and dog print circa 1880.

Another from that same time period, 1876

And the star with hexagons is also a cheater print from the 1880s.

And this Tumbling Block Star is from the 1830s.

P is for Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcase

P is for Pieced Pillowcases from Pennsylvania

This case is circa 1876 and has both faux/simulated patchwork and regular pieceing.
Center star section is faux patchwork aka cheater cloth and the border squares are pieced.

More piecing on the back. These patchwork and applique pillowcases are a uniquely Pennsylvania phenomenon.

Detail of a much earlier (1830s) Pennsylvania pillowcase also in my collection

A striking Barn Raising setting

Another one from my collection - this is a summer spread without batting. It features a wonderful cheater print made for the United States Centennial in 1876.

Antique Pieced Patchwork Pillowcase from Pennsylvania

A  couple of years ago I was able to find a prized Pennsylvania pillowcase to add to my collection. (I've since found a co9uple more).  My friend, Ann Hermes, who literally wrote the book on Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcases (you can buy the book and even your own antique PA pillowcase on her etsy store).

From the etsy listing: "This patchwork pillowcase, dating to ca. 1880 is a rare textile form from Southeastern counties of Pennsylvania. The interesting feature about this pillowcase is that it contains, along with patchwork squares, a piece of cheater fabric, also called printed patchwork, produced by the Cocheco Manufacturing Co. in New Hampshire."

The star fabric is the "cheater print" which means it is printed in the fabric rather than pieced or sewn. I'm a big fan of antique cheater fabrics. And the combination of faux and real patchwork is a charming touch,

And the pillowcase backing is also pieced along two edges.

Antique Crazy Quilt Cheater Print

Yesterday I shared a Tumbling Block Star quilt that featured a crazy quilt cheater print fabric. Here's more from that great fabric. --the butterfly below is fussy cut from the stimulated/preprinted crazy quilt fabric.

Here's the cheater fabric -- see the butterfly! Don't forget to click on pictures to enlarge and see details.

And the bird and here he is on the hexagon quilt

And a close-up of him along with a blue cheater print below him.

And that blue polka dot and the paisley below it are both fussy cut from the crazy quilt print.

Antique Tumbling Block Stars Quilt

Starley Quilt Collection. I have a special fondness for tumbling block stars and this antique top is another special example of the pattern. Note the careful color placement.

Don't forget to click on pictures to see details like the bird print below (under pink diamond, far right). It is from the crazy quilt cheater print I've written about in the past.

There is more of that same crazy quilt print below - middle of the picture next to Indigo Blue diamond - piece with simulated or faux crazy quilt embroidery stitches. Enjoy

Flower Pot Cheater Print Wholecloth quilt

Revisiting this wonderful chintz cheater fabric (preprinted patchwork) featuring a rose flower pot and separate roses surrounded by simulated (printed not pieced) 9 patches.

Several books list it as dating from 1850s to 1870s but I've seen it in a dated 1843 signature quilt from Pennsylvania/New Jersey so it actually from late 1830s to early 1840s.

The alternating faux 9 patch blocks have fabulous fabrics that seem so modern. I especially like the jungle inspired pattern that look like giraffe

And here is the lovely backing - buff and blue stripe
